What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai is a stand-up martial art and combat sport that utilizes punching, kicking, kneeing and various clinching techniques. People also refer to it as “Thai boxing”. And because you use all of your limbs…(fists, elbows, knees and shins) it’s known as the “art of eight limbs”.
Is Muay Thai good for self-defense?
Because it was created as a self-defense method for unarmed combat military to use on the battlegrounds, it is one of the most effective martial arts for self-defense.
But Muay Thai is more than punching and kicking. It also involves various defensive techniques that can help you minimize the chances of getting hurt in an attack.
As a beginner in Muay Thai, one of the first things you learn is how to block to protect your head and body. And these techniques will come in handy to keep you from being knocked out if you’re in a fight.
Another technique like the push-kick (Muay Thai Thip) can keep an attacker at bay. And just as important as learning how to punch or block, is learning good movement and footwork, which will minimize your chances of getting hit.
Will Kickboxing help me lose weight?
Aside from learning valuable self-defense techniques, another benefit of taking a kickboxing class is the cardio and upper-body workout you’ll get. Ask anyone that has put on gloves and went head-to-head with a bag…it never loses. You’ll definitely feel the burn.
